On the Road with The News

August 9, 2012 – DTE Energy Music Theater, Clarkston, MI

We’re heading back west now. I seem to recall blogging about DTE, or Pine Knob as we know it, last year on the “Soulsville ” tour. We have now played this theater, about 40 miles north of downtown Detroit, 19 times over the past 28 years. Detroit has always been

August 6, 2012 – Musikfest, Bethlehem, PA

The Musikfest is a 2 week long festival held every summer with entertainment on 6 or 7 stages spread around town. The new Main Stage is directly in front of the old, shuttered Bethlehem Steel Mill. One of the highlights was our round of golf at Saucon Valley Golf Club,

August 5, 2012 – Bethel Woods Performing Arts Center, Bethel Woods, NY

The Bethel Woods Performing Arts Center was built a while back on the site of the famous Woodstock Music Festival. It’s a beautiful, sate of the art theater. Woodstock was the gig where Joe Cocker really launched his career with his famous version of “A Little Help From My Friends.”

August 4, 2012 – MGM Grand Theater Foxwoods, Mashantucket, CT

They tell me that this is the largest casino in the US, and I believe it. The theater is gorgeous. This is the 4th or 5th time we’ve played here, and it’s always a good time because it sounds awesome. The days seem to be flying by SO FAST.

August 3, 2012 – Tropicana Hotel Theater, Atlantic City, NJ

Don’t know why, but the venue was moved from the Tower theater in Philly to the Tropicana in A.C. Our friends Tom Johnston, Marc Russo, Ed and Sam Ryan, and John McFee from the Doobie Brothers were in town with a night off, so they came to the show. We

July 29, 2012 – Nikon Amphitheater, Jones Beach, NY

It was a beautiful evening in Jones Beach, out on Long Island. The theater is literally on the water. We’ve played here many times over the years, and it’s always a fun time. Rob Sudduth pointed out to me that Bill O’Reilly was in the fourth row center, clapping on

July 28, 2012 – PNC Bank Arts Center, Holmdel, NJ

This is the old Garden State Arts Center that we’ve played for the last 25 years. Thunderstorms blew through all day but it didn’t stop people from hanging out on the lawn. Another hot and steamy one, what a summer so far! I’m getting too old for this. We’re dying

July 27, 2012 – Tag’s Summerstage, Big Flats, NY

When we were driving in to our hotel in Corning, N.Y., a huge thunderstorm cell was blowing through. I got to my room and watched the wind pick up to about 50 MPH, I could see rotation forming directly overhead, and sure enough, 13 miles down the valley a tornado

Hot, Hot , Hot, Steamy, Sweaty, Hot , Hot, Humid, Moist , Bad, Bad, Bad. I know, sounds like a bad porn flick. Chastain is a great little theater we have played many, many times. It’s ALWAYS super humid this time of year here. The night before our show Sean,

This is a fairly new venue in the hills outside of Austin. Very pretty. Lots of old friends at this one. Ray Benson, Jeff Dowd, (THE real Dude – ever seen “The Big Lebowski”? Jeff is the guy the movie was based on.) Mighty Mike Schermer, etc. etc. Here is

July 21, 2012 – Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion, Woodlands, TX

Another steamy one, but this time the stage is air-conditioned! Awesome! It gets difficult to come up with new things to say about each show, so I think I’ll just mention distinctive things about the shows. This one – air-conditioning. Sorry, the photographer took a break for this one.

July 20, 2012 – Meyerson Symphony Hall, Dallas, TX

Super hot outside, but we played indoors on this one. Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. The Meyerson is a beautiful symphony hall in downtown Dallas. We played here a few years ago. There are seats around the back of the stage, and behind those, an amazing, massive pipe organ. I can’t tell you how

July 19, 2012 – Zoo Amphitheater, Oklahoma City, OK

There are shows that should not be played. This was one of them. 104 degrees at showtime, with about 90% humidity. The sun was directly in our eyes for the first half of our set. In a word, brutal. There was a point in “But it’s Allright” that I wasn’t

July 17, 2012 – Sandia Amphitheater, Albuquerque, NM

Another cozy little place. North of downtown Albuquerque and kind of in the sticks, but when the golf course is across the street and the theater is right next to the hotel, all is right with the world. Said Huey at one point, “I know all you people here in

July 15, 2012 – Anselmo Valencia Amphitheater, Tucson, AZ

Beautiful little “baby shed” as I call it. Sheds are those big venues with a pavilion and a grass seating area in the back. Great sounding little place, this one. Weather hampered the proceedings again. Serious T-storms blowing through one after another. Sound check cancelled for the 2nd day in

July 14, 2012 – Harrah’s Laughlin, Laughlin, NV

Laughlin is, well, Laughlin. You know what I mean if you’ve ever been here. On the Northeast corner of the Mojave Desert, it’s usually about 110 degrees here. We got lucky and had thunderstorms cool things off a bit, but not after they cancelled sound check. Huey played harp on
